Hydrogen

The electricity generated in the OTEC cycle is used to break down water into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas in a process known as electrolysis. The hydrogen gas produced (green hydrogen) can be transported to various locations in either gaseous or liquid form and used directly in various hydrogen fuel applications such as:

  • fuel cells in cars, buses and trucks
  • industrial equipment (forklifts, etc.)
  • shipboard generators
  • replacing fossil fuels in utility electrical generating plants
